Editing to a Director’s Brief

This unit will enable candidates to develop skills in relation to editing and understanding the overall post-production process. Skills as a technician and artist will be expanded through creative interpretation of a Director's brief. Once completed candidates will be able to prepare source material for editing, demonstrate editing skills, make a rough-cut and a fine-cut edit all of which meets the requirements of the Director's brief.
Qualification gained is HN Unit DM10 35. HN Unit: Editing: An introduction should be completed prior to attempting this unit.

PDA Housing Advice
Shelter Scotland are providing this PDA Housing Advice qualification. The primary audience is that of housing advisers and front-line staff working within the housing sector. However the awards are not specifically for those in the housing sector and will be of interest and use to other staff groups working in the wider field of advice and guidance.
The benefits of the PDA award are as follows:
Accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority
Opportunity for staff to develop knowledge and show commitment to continued professional development
Available at SCQF level 6 and level 7
The award will be part of a larger, established suite of PDAs for the advice sector

Genetics
Elmwood College are providing this HN unit which is designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the main concepts of inheritance and how genetic evolution may occur.
The unit covers a range of genetic disorders, their diagnosis and treatment and is intended for those who wish to progress to a degree course or for students who intend to enter the workforce as laboratory technicians.
On completion of the unit the successful candidates will be able to:
- describe the principles and patterns of inheritance in higher organisms
- describe mechanisms for genetic evolution and population genetics
- describe genetic disorders
- explain the use of gene therapy in genetic disorders
Applicants should have successfully completed an NC in an appropriate subject to be eligible to enrol in this course.
This course has flexible start dates until 6 Jun 2012 and costs £90 (including VAT) to attend.

Sports Tourism Development
This module is provided by the University of the West of Scotland and introduces students to the subject of sport tourism and where it fits into the areas of sport, tourism, sport development and sport tourism development. Through a series of lectures and tutorials, students will explore the linking of sport and tourism from the past to the present and be able to forecast future developments.
The course will run from 10am - 12pm every Thursday from 26 January 2012 to 24 May 2012.
The qualification gained is SCQF Level 9.

PDA - Renewable Energy Systems
Adam Smith College in Fife are providing this course – it has been designed to provide candidates with knowledge and understanding of current and future trends in energy production, sustainability and energy conservation issues and the role that renewable energy systems technologies may play in meeting energy demands and in limiting global environmental change.

Coatbridge College is the provider of the course 'Passport to Lab Science Skills'.
This course will help you develop the essential knowledge and skills required to work in a scientific laboratory.
It will give you a unique opportunity to experience a laboratory environment and develop those all important analytical skills.
The units you will study on this course are Safety (Int 1), Working with Micro Organisms and Science Practical Skills (2.5 SQA credits)

Confident cold calling
Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce is running a course to help you get over apprehensions about ‘cold calling’. This course explores the concepts of cold calling, the psychology and the core skills you need to be successful. It will develop your confidence to cold call, and give you the key skills and approaches to be a successful cold caller.
This course is for you if:
- You use the telephone to generate more leads and set up more appointments
- You tend to find something to distract you from making your calls
- It affects your confidence when someone puts the phone down
- You “hate” making calls, which is adversely affecting the results you get

Courses that 'work'
KDS Training are running a combination of vocational and life skills courses in various sectors including Construction, Care, Hospitality, Retail, Cleaning and Logistics.
Each course will include an introduction to the chosen sector and skills for life/interview skills. Depending on the chosen sector, one or more of the following vocational skills will be included:
- First Aid at Work (HSE approved)
- Health and Safety at Work
- Moving and Handling of Objects and People
- Manual Handling
- CSCS Health and Safety Certificate Test
- Elementary Food Hygiene
- COSHH Basics

These courses are aimed at individuals who have little or no knowledge of the chosen sector and will therefore benefit greatly from the highly skilled training team at KDS.

Chemistry matters for science students
Provided by Carnegie College, this is a National Unit in Fundamental Chemistry and it’s available for students who want to improve their chemistry knowledge.
The part-time day course is available at Carnegie College and has been developed to provide students with problem solving skills and practical abilities to help them when the time comes for a career in a lab.
The course focuses on chemical equations, organic chemistry and chemical equilibria and also the practical application and reporting of these.

Financial services: employability skills - NQ unit
Provided by Clydebank College near Glasgow, this unit is intended to be integrated with the other units in the course and addresses the employability skills and attitudes in demand from employers in the sector. These skills will be practised and assessed in this unit and in practical contexts throughout the course.
There will be strong focus on the development of self-presentations skills which are particularly important in this sector. Students will develop self-evaluation skills and there will be opportunities for recording progress and planning for improvement.

First Aid for when your feet are not firmly on the ground
Provided by Evolve International Safety Training Ltd. at their Aberdeen premises, this HSE Approved Offshore First Aid course is ideal for those who work offshore to provide on-site First Aid care and general support to the offshore medic.
An offshore First Aider should be able to assist in the management of serious incidents involving multiple casualties and be trained to escort a sick or injured person being evacuated ashore – this course will cover these aspects of the role and will set learners in good stead to face any unexpected incidents whilst working away from land.
Upon successful completion, a HSE approved Offshore First Aid certificate will be awarded (this will be valid for 3 years)

Accounting made easy for cash conscious businesses
Rural business owners who would like an easy guide to balancing the books have been invited to attend a self-study course designed to provide them with the financial know-how they need to succeed.
Craibstone Enterprise Learning Centre manages the course targeted at small business owners who would like to put a manual cash accounting system in place.
The programme will introduce participants to basic financial recording systems and cover topics including how to complete VAT returns from cashbooks, the importance of planning ahead and budgeting and how to reconcile a cashbook with bank statements.
The course can be done from home or from the learning centre at Craibstone Estate in Aberdeen, though all exams must be held at the learning centre.
