Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from flowers, leaves, herbs and wood to relax, stimulate, help physical and emotional conditions or just to make people feel good.
This fragrant therapy could be more than 5000 years old, but it has become a familiar part of our modern culture. It is one of Scotland’s most popular alternative therapies and more and more people are keen to learn about it.
There are aromatherapy courses on offer in Aberdeen, Clackmannan, Clydebank, Coatbridge, Cupar, Dumfries, Edinburgh, Elgin, Glasgow, Hamilton and Motherwell.
These range from a basic introduction course, which gives information about the main essential oils and how they are applied, to a higher certificate course. This certificate course covers various stages such as planning treatments with clients, preparing the environment and oils for treatments, carrying out treatments, evaluating the treatments, and giving advice. There is also the opportunity to learn more about essential oils and different techniques involved.
Carers and health professionals can take specialised courses about aromatherapy and cancer care or aromatherapy and the elderly.
All of the courses are ILA Scotland approved which means you could get up to £200 towards the cost of your course.

JAWS droppingly good
Around 180,000 people in Scotland have serious sight problems, which can mean severely restricted access to traditional computer programmes. However, using a screen reader can make a huge difference to this accessibility. JAWS (Job Access With Speech) for Windows is currently the most popular screen reader on the market, working with your PC to provide access to today’s software applications and the Internet. It uses an internal software speech synthesizer and the computer’s sound card to read aloud information from the screen, providing technology to access a wide variety of information, education and job related applications.
The RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) employment and learning centre’s basic introduction to JAWS for the blind and partially sighted teaches learners how to:
- Start up Windows and carry out simple file management tasks
- Create, modify and print a short document using Microsoft Word
- Send and receive emails using Microsoft Outlook
- Using the Internet and the World Wide Web
- Manage files and folders
The course costs £210 and is open to anyone who is blind or partially sighted and who can work through training materials independently with tutorial support. Materials are presented in an audio format. Attendance is by negotiation, but will either be on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9.00am to 4.30pm over 4 weeks.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is one of the best ways to make a living while travelling abroad. However, with many foreign nationals moving into the UK, it can be an equally practical qualification at home too.
i-to-i UK’s Weekend Essential TEFL course lasts for two days, and is held regularly in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Using your existing knowledge of spoken English, you can develop new and exciting methods to create your own lessons, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Topics covered include classroom management; an introduction to grammar; using the blackboard; ensuring students get the right tuition; pronunciation and intonation; reading and listening; as well as periods of teaching practice, and a unit on TEFL career options.
The course is open to anyone aged 17 or over (remember though that to open an ILA Scotland account you need to be over 18), with native or near-native English fluency, and costs £215 per person.

Boomtown Rats…
You know the urban myth that no-one is ever more than six feet away from a rat? According to the 2006 National Rodent Survey, it may not be so far from the truth. Over the past five years, UK pest controllers have reported a 39% increase in call-outs to deal with brown rats, and a 14% rise in mice infestations. The National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) believes global warming is boosting vermin numbers because the milder winters kill fewer rodents and make for more annual breeding cycles. Another important factor is the growth of fast-food outlets, increasing the amount of rubbish on streets.
Oatridge College’s Combined Vermin Control course is suitable for workers in a wide range of industries and work environments, including agriculture and industrial sites. It covers pests you need to control, (including rabbits and moles as well as rats and mice); the relevant regulations; both preventative and curative methods of control; how to administer pesticides safely and effectively and how to plan and monitor a vermin control programme. The two day course costs £120, and runs on 22 and 23 February, from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

Counting sheep
Although you probably didn’t realise it, the first sheep dip was invented in 1830 by a Scottish man called George Wilson, from Coldstream in the Borders. In those days, sheep dip (which is used to protect sheep from infestation) was made from diluted arsenic. Although these days it’s made from different insecticides and fungicides, the chemicals are still extremely harmful and it’s against the law to buy and use them without passing the National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC) certificate.
Oatridge College in Broxburn runs a one day NPTC course in sheep dipping, costing £100. The certificate test covers human, animal and environmental safety in planning, preparation, use and disposal of dips. Friday 9 February 2007 is the next scheduled day for the course, but it is also available on request.

Passport to work…
The Safety Passport scheme teaches basic health and safety practices to engineering and construction industry workers, so they are more aware of their own safety onsite. In the early 1990’s, a group of industrialists from the power, steel, oil, gas and chemical industries realised there were no common standards in safety training. Together they developed Safety Passport, which is now recognised nationwide.
The two-day training programme covers four modules:
- Safe Behaviour at Work
- Safe Place of Work
- Safe Systems of Work
- Safety Problems and Safe Solutions
Mettech (Grangemouth and Hamilton), Business Training Services (Greenock), North Highland College (Thurso), and Sibbald Training (Aberdeen) regularly run ILA Scotland approved Safety Passport courses, with prices ranging between £95 and £140.
